Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? Society benefits more fromworks of great artists than from political leaders.
Human society is developed step by stepthrough the efforts made by millions of pioneers. These great man from variousfields may have changed or improved our society in different aspects. Thus, it’sunconvincing to judge what kinds of people make more achievements on oursociety. In my opinion, we should value both of their efforts rather than makea meaningless comparison.To begin with, an important criteria weusually take to measure political leaders’ achievements is how greatly theyimproved the quality of citizen’s life. That is, according to Maslow’s NeedHierarchy, the base physiological need and safety need for human. Take apanoramic view of history, those great political leaders who are still admirabletoday must have made contributions to benefit the public’s base need in orderto promote the development of society. Lincoln is admired for his efforts on thecivil war and the publication of The Emancipation Proclamation. Sun Yat-sen isrespected for overthrowing the feudal and decayed monarchy of China. No onewould suggest that these accomplishments could be replaced merely by a book ora painting since no artistic works can directly and fundamentally change theviewer’s life condition. From this perspective, the value of masterpieces isnot of importance as the great political leaders.However, we still cannot depreciate theworks of great artists since it benefits our society in different ways. Infact, the higher level of Maslow’s Need Hierarchy is love, esteem and self-actualization,which are mainly influenced by art works. Since you started to get educated,you made your first step to learn from art works. The passages and books youread gradually build your attitudes towards life and world. Also, the art worksare regarded as reflection of culture and history. They inspire every singleperson by telling him/her what beauty and ugly is and encouraging him/her tothink what kind of person he/she wants to be, and finally enlighten the wholesociety. What’s more, artistic works are also thesource of creativity, where many designers can find idea and inspiration. Anillustrating example is the designing style of Apple products. The minimalismstyle reflected in Apple’s products builds a bridge between technology and art,and eventually attracts millions of customers. By linking products with art,Apple has become the most valuable company around the world and greatly promotethe development of US economy. To end up, works of great artists andefforts of political leaders both benefit our society from variousperspectives. There is no absolute way to quantify or compare these achievements.
