If you are interested in taking your education to the next level, you may be trying to decide between an EMBA or an MBA. While there are many similarities between the two, und&erstanding the subtle differences helps you make the right decision for your career plans. An MBA, or Master of Business Administration degree is a graduate degree that focuses on business administration. MBA coursework typically focuses on a variety of areas related to business, including human resources, accounting, operations management, marketing and finance. Many programs allow students to focus on a specialty area so that they hone their skills in an area that is meaningful to them.An EMBA, or Executive Master of Business Administration is similar to an MBA in terms of coursework requirements. The primary difference between the two is that the EMBA is geared toward managers and executives. As such, most of those who are enrolled in an EMBA program have more work experience than those who enroll in an MBA program.Deciding between an EMBA or MBA program is a personal decision that must be made based primarily upon your work experience. If you have relatively little experience in business or if you have not held a management position, you are not likely to be a good candidate for an EMBA program. If you have business experience and you are interested in pursuing a managerial position, on the other hand, earning an MBA is an excellent stepping stone toward achieving these goals. Most EMBA and MBA programs offer flexible scheduling. Since both programs are designed to suit the needs of people who are already employed, they typically offer night and weekend classes. Some are also offered online, allowing you to create the schedule that works best for you.Deciding between an EMBA or MBA program is relatively simple. If you have more than 10 years of experience in the business field or if you have held a managerial position for several years, the EMBA program is probably a better match to your skills and needs. With either program, you are likely to gain valuable skills that make you more attractive to potential employers.Talk with an academic adviser about your decision and future goals. The adviser assists with educational planning and helps you choose the right program for your career path.
The Masters in Business Administration (MBA) is a popular graduate degree for many people who finish college. It offers great opportunities following graduation. There are act&ually two types of MBA programs. One is a regular MBA program and the other is an Executive MBA program (EMBA), which is a graduate program tailored for business executives. What is the difference between them? Many people who go to business school for a regular MBA have to pay for their graduate education out of their own pockets. For most of them, this is not economically feasible, so they take out loans to help pay for their education. Once they graduate they may or may not have a job lined up with a company with a good salary and opportunity for advancement. In contrast, an EMBA student is already employed by a company and is going to school on the company's dollar. This saves the student tons of money in loans that are not taken out and have to be repaid. Moreover, the student already has a secure job and does not have to worry about trying to find employment after graduation. Most MBA students discover that their class schedules are so tight, often with back-to-back classes, and their work loads are so heavy that they cannot continue in their regular jobs without falling behind in their graduate programs. In contrast, and EMBA student is probably still working for his or her company and getting time off from work to attend class. This makes the EMBA student's life much easier compared to the MBA student. An MBA student must search for companies to hire him or her upon graduation and hopefully find a company with opportunity for advancement. An EMBA student already works for a company, and since the company is paying for his or her education, the company potentially has an executive position waiting for the EMBA student upon graduation. This allows the EMBA student to focus solely on mastering the work in graduate school instead of forcing him or her to take precious time to search for jobs that may not lead to advancement.A regular MBA student has a nonlinear route to advancement because it usually takes a few years of work at one company to gain experience that enables the MBA graduate to advance to a higher position, but likely in another company. An EMBA student does not face this uncertainty. The EMBA student has likely already worked with the same company for 5 or 10 years and is on the EMBA track because the company expects the loyal employees to stay for another 20, 40 or even 60 years, going up a linear track to eventually become Chief Executive Officer. These are some of the differences between a regular MBA student and an Executive MBA student that you are likely to find at a typical business school. The EMBA student has a more structured life that is easier to balance compared to the regular MBA student. The EMBA student also has more likely professional success compared to the regular MBA student. You need to note that in the business world, an Executive MBA is considered as a lighter version of a normal MBA.
