OnePlus One invite system further detailed
We've heard a fair bit about the invite system that will be used for the initial
purchases, and it seems the company has been offering some updates on how the process will work. For one, OnePlus is listening to feedback and they are making every effort to offer them without worrying about people re-selling them to others.
OnePlus didn't go into all the specifics about how they plan to keep people from selling the invitations, however they did mention the "re-sale of invites will not be a major issue." The few bits they discussed here include how the system was designed to counter the potential for resale, and they will have "full control over distribution and expiry times."
In terms of the expirations -- the invites will "typically" be valid for 24 hours. And in a bit of good news for those waiting, once the invite has expired it will be recycled and sent to someone else. OnePlus had also said those with an invite will be able to invite other users. The invites that can be given away are expected to be valid for 1-2 weeks.
The initial invite availability will be limited, both in terms of invites sent out by OnePlus and of invites that users can pass on to others. OnePlus mentioned how availability will increase as production ramps up. If you remember, the production schedule was recently adjusted to
coming before the 16GB model and it looks like the "first real batch of invites" will roll out in late May (for the 64GB Sandstone Black version).

will be available to purchase to everyone, no invite necessary, on January 20. The sales free-for-all will last for two hours, from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm EST in North America, 19:00 to 21:00 GMT in Europe, and 19:00 to 21:00 HKT in Asia.
Obviously it’d be nice if the OnePlus One were available to everyone all of the time, but thanks to all of the free-for-all sales that OnePlus has hosted lately, it hasn’t been super difficult to come by a One. If you still haven’t snagged a OnePlus One reason, though, you’ll get another chance on Monday. Better get that credit card ready.

It’s not often that we see a new company attempt to elbow-in on the already-crowded smartphone market, so when OnePlus introduced

OnePlus revealed on Reddit that it’s about to transition from using invites to a more traditional pre-order system. That still sounds like the company’s seeing stock problems, as pre-orders imply limited availability, but the key here is that any interested buyer could place a pre-order whenever he or she wanted, rather than waiting until coming across an invite code.
September was the initial target for the start of pre-orders (and end of invites), but OnePlus says it’s now looking to make the switch sometime in October, instead.
