Now the art market is worth billions.
Join me as I uncover the colourful secrets of China’s art market.
CCTV News InternationalIn 2013, China spent more on constructing buildings than it did on healthcare and education combined. Everyday, another 1 and a half kilometres of railways are laid and more than 200 kilometres of road are opened. How is China's urban landscape really evolving and how is it impacting people’s lives?CCTV News InternationalThe number of people aged over 60 in China will soon be more than 200 million.
If they were a country, they’d be the 6th most populous country in the world.
But in the space of a generation, this number is set to double.
I go to the rich cities and the poorer countryside to see what's being done.CCTV News InternationalThere are 220 million students in China.
1000 years of examinations have shaped a unique educational system.
Can the seeds of reform grow in Chinese classrooms?
How does the starting line affect a child's destiny?CCTV News InternationalIn 2012, China became the largest source country for international tourism but
The bigger story is that the domestic tourism market grew even quicker than outbound tourism -
Around 3 billion trips will be taken this year, but 40% of them will be taken in just 4% of the year.
Deficiencies in infrastructure, policy and consumer culture are creating bottlenecks in the market.
CCTV News InternationalIn 2013, 7 million students graduated from China's Universities and Colleges - the highest number in the nation's history. But the number of job positions available for them fell by 15% compared to the year before. Graduate unemployment is a perennial issue, but this year, the problem is particularly severe. So what are the difficulties that new graduate and employers are facing, and what are the deeper aspects of Chinese society that are driving the issue?CCTV News InternationalIn 1978 one in 5 Chinese people lived in cities, and by 2011 it was 1 in 2.
The massive transformation from an agrarian society, to an industrial one has happened in just one generation.
Hiding behind staggering skyline, a number of problems have been brewing.
Now, trying to combat these problems, the government is looking to a new style of urban transformation: Townization.CCTV News InternationalInspired by a Sina Weibo survey that asked millions &What are your biggest concerns for 2013&, before Lianghui, I investigated four of the most popluar responses:
AIR POLLUTION: The UN found 16 of the world’s top 20 most polluted cities were located in China.
FOOD SAFETY: The melamine-tainted 'Milk Scandal' hospitalised more than 50,000 babies.
PROPERTY MARKET: More people own 2 or more houses than those who own any property at all.
HUKOU SYSTEM: 77% of Public Service spending is allocated to around a 36% of the people.
CCTV News InternationalThe biases favouring men that have played out through generations starts at birth. The combination of the pressures to produce a male heir, China’s One-Child Policy and sex-selective abortions means that far more boys are born than girls. For every 100 girls born as the second child, there are more than 150 boys. It is estimated that China today has around 30-40 million “missing girls” – one can only despair at the lost talent.
It is also difficult for women to climb the decision-making ladder, occupying just 7% of positions on the upper rungs of the government. And the disparity is even greater in the countryside with only 1% of Village Committee Chairs being occupied by women, despite women making up more than half of the agricultural workforce.
CCTV News InternationalChina is now the world’s largest trading nation. This year, more than 10% of all international trade was done with China. But, in spite of this, less than 1% of international trade was paid for in Chinese Yuan.
This huge disparity between the dominance of the nation’s economy and the insignificance of the nation’s currency has become a source of hot debate for the reform of the Chinese and international monetary systems. Can and indeed will the Chinese Yuan become a major globalised currency, like the US Dollar or the Euro? And if so, how?
CCTV News InternationalThe secret to any economic miracle is good financing. In this programme we will explore the silent miracle of underground private financing in the Chinese city of Wenzhou and see how this came undone after 30 years of steady progress. We will look at how this credit crisis precipitated and examine what is being done to reform private financing in China today.
