　　当问到中国乒乓球队的第一个训练基地在哪时，黄石电视台资深制片人南海骄傲的告诉记者：“在我们黄石，而且我们已经举办了两届国家乒乓球节，现在，我们正在筹划第三届！”
　　据南海介绍，上世界80年代初期，为了更好地进行封闭式训练，当时的国家体委和中国乒协，希望在首都北京以外为中国乒乓球队建立一个专门的训练基地。几经挑选，最后终于定点黄石。
　　从1987年5月起，黄石人只用了短短几个月的时间，就建设起了中国乒乓球队的第一个训练基地，其中包括改建和扩建了一座能够同时容纳32张球台的训练馆和一座造型新颖的生活宿舍楼。国家主席杨尚昆亲自为基地题名。1987年12月，中国乒乓球队的运动员、教练员和有关官员们，第一次入驻黄石训练基地。许多运动员高兴地感叹：我们也有了“自己的家”！
　　原中国乒乓球队男队主教练蔡振华说“黄石在我们运动员、教练员的心目中是非常的亲切，不仅仅是一个熟悉。因为我们任何一个教练应该都把这当成是自己的家。我们所取得的每一项成绩都包含了他们。”
　　世界冠军王涛也在黄石集训过两次，他说：“我在这里集训过2次，提高了很多自己的技术水平。我在比赛也有胜利的时候也有失败的时候，黄石人民还是一直给我发贺电还有一些鼓励的电报，所以给我的感动很深。”
