相傳白度母是觀世音菩薩左眼眼淚所化，據藏傳佛教說，觀世音菩薩的化身很多，度母是他化身的救苦救難本尊，以顏色區分，現為二十一尊相，二十一尊相顏色都不相同，最受尊敬，寺廟中最常見的是白度母。
白度母身色潔白，面目端莊祥和，雙手和雙足各生一眼，因而又稱為七眼佛母。本尊的功德誓願和心咒，主要為息滅眾生的病苦，消除因冤業、痴業、魔障引起的各種病症，幫修行者去除逆緣，增長壽量，解脫生死輪迴。
