every 100 Americans are __16__________ 65. The aging of the

One day, he gathered up all his strength and decided to attend a
job interview. His appointment was at 10 am and it was already
8:30. While waiting for a bus to the office where he was supposed
to be interviewed, he saw an elderly man wildly kicking the tyre of

In my living room, there is a plaque (匾) that advises me to “Bloom
(开花) where you are planted.” It reminds me of Dorothy. I got to
know Dorothy in the early 1980s, when I was teaching Early
Childhood Development through a program with Union College in
Barbourville, Kentucky. The job responsibilities required
occasional visits to the classroom of each teacher in the program.
Dorothy stands out in my memory as one who “bloomed” in her remote
Dorothy taught in a school in Harlan County, Kentucky, Appalachian
Mountain area. To get to her school from the town of Harlan, I
followed a road winding around the mountain. In the eight-mile
journey, I crossed the same railroad track five times, giving the
possibility of getting caught by the same train five times. Rather
than feeling excited by this drive through the mountains, I found
it depressing. The poverty level was shocking and the small shabby
houses gave me the greatest feeling of hopelessness.
From the moment of my arrival at the little school, all gloom (忧郁)
disappeared. Upon arriving at Dorothy’s classroom, I was greeted
with smiling faces and treated like a queen. The children had been
prepared to show me their latest projects. Dorothy told me with a
big smile that they were serving poke greens salad and cornbread
for “dinner” (lunch). In case you don’t know, poke greens are a
weed-type plant that grows wild, especially on poor ground.
Dorothy never ran out of reports of exciting activities of her
students. Her enthusiasm never cooled down. When it came time to
sit for the testing and interviewing required to receive her Child
Development Associate Certification, Dorothy was ready. She came to
the assessment and passed in all areas. Afterward, she invited me
to the one-and-only steak house in the area to celebrate her
victory, as if she had received her Ph. D. degree. After the meal,
she placed a little box containing an old pen in my hand. She said
it was a family heirloom (传家宝), but to me it is a treasured symbol
of appreciation and pride that cannot be matched with

Does Fame Drive You Crazy?
Although being famous might sound like a dream come true,
today’s stars, feeling like zoo animals, face pressures that few of
us can imagine. They are at the center of much of the world’s
attention. Paparazzi (狗仔队) camp outside their homes, cameras ready.
Tabloids (小报) publish thrilling stories about their personal lives.
Just imagine not being able to do anything without being
photographed or interrupted for a signature.
According to psychologist Christina Villareal, celebrities --
famous people -- worry constantly about their public appearance.
Eventually, they start to lose track of who they really are, seeing
themselves the way their fans imagine them, not as the people they
were before everyone knew their names. “Over time,” Villareal says,
“they feel separated and alone.”
The phenomenon of tracking celebrities has been around for ages.
In the 4th century B.C., painters followed Alexander the Great into
battle, hoping to picture his victories for his admirers. When
Charles Dickens visited America in the 19th century, his sold-out
readings attracted thousands of fans, leading him to complain (抱怨)
about his lack of privacy. Tabloids of the 1920s and 1930s ran
articles about film-stars in much the same way that modern tabloids
and websites do.
Being a public figure today, however, is a lot more difficult
than it used to be. Superstars cannot move about without worrying
about photographers with modern cameras. When they say something
silly or do something ridiculous, there is always the Internet to
spread the news in minutes and keep their “story” alive
If fame is so troublesome, why aren’t all celebrities running
away from it? The answer is there are still ways to deal with it.
Some stars stay calm by surrounding themselves with trusted friends
and family or by escaping to remote places away from big cities.
They focus not on how famous they are but on what they love to do
or whatever made them famous in the first place.
Sometimes a few celebrities can get a little justice. Still,
even stars who enjoy full justice often complain about how hard
their lives are. They are tired of being famous already.
36. It can be learned from the passage that stars
today__________.
A. can no longer have their privacy protected
B. are often misunderstood by the public
C. spend too much on their public appearance
D. care little about how they have come into fame
37. What is the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A. Great heroes of the past were generally admired.
B. The problem faced by celebrities has a long history.
C. Well-known actors are usually targets of tabloids.
D. Works of popular writers often have a lot of readers.
38. What makes it much harder to be a celebrity today?
A. Availability of modern media.
B. Inadequate social recognition. &
C. Lack of favorable chances.
D. Huge population of fans.
39. The reasons why there are still so many celebrities might
not be ________.
& A. that a few stars stay calm with their
& B. that some stars just avoid public
appearance
& C. that everyone in society runs after
& D. that they fix their attention on what they
40. What is the author’s attitude toward modern celebrity?
Sincere.&&&&&&
B. Sceptical.
C. Disapproving.&
D. Sympathetic.
Sparrow is a fast-food chain with 200 restaurants. Some years
ago, the group to which Sparrow belonged was taken over by another
company. Although Sparrow showed no sign of declining, the chain
was generally in an unhealthy state. With more and more fast-food
concepts reaching the market, the Sparrow menu had to struggle for
attention. And to make matters worse, its new owner had no plans to
give it the funds it required.
Sparrow failed to grow for another two years. Until a new CEO,
Carl Pearson, decided to build up its market share. He did a
survey, which showed that consumers who already used Sparrow
restaurants were extremely positive about the chain, while
customers of other fast-food chains were unwilling to turn away
from&them. Sparrow had to develop a
new promotional campaign.
Pearson faced a battle over the future of the Sparrow brand. The
chain’s owner now favored rebranding Sparrow as Marcy’s
restaurants. Pearson resisted, arguing for an advertising campaign
designed to convince customers that visits to Sparrow restaurants
were fun. Such an attempt to establish a positive relationship
between a company and the general public was unusual for that time.
Pearson strongly believed that numbers were the key to success,
rather than customers’ speeding power. Finally, the owner accepted
The campaign itself changed the traditional advertising style of
the fast-food industry. The TV ads of Sparrow focused on
entertainment and featured original songs performed by a variety of
stars. Instead of showing the superiority of a specific product,
the intension was to put Sparrow in the hearts of potential
customers.
Pearson also made other decisions which he believed would
contribute to the new Sparrow image. For example, he offered to
lower the rent of any restaurants which achieved a certain increase
in their turnover (营业额).
These efforts paid off, and Sparrow soon became one of the most
successful fast-food chains in the regions where it operated.
41. Which was one of the problems Sparrow faced before Pearson
became CEO?
A. The number of its customers was
declining&
B. Its customers found the food unhealthy&
C. It was in need of financial support&
D. Most of its restaurants were closed
42. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 2 refer

A. changed people’s views on pop stars

读写任务:
Version 1:
Sam, a student, was sent to a boarding school, in which he
missed his parents very much, and thus he got sick and could not
focus his attention on his lessons. (31 words)
&&& In fact,
in real life, everyone must have an experience of feeling homesick.
I remember when I was 10 years old, because my parents were busy, I
was sent to my uncle’s in another city. Right here, I would have to
study in school for two years. Although my uncle and his family
were really kind to me, I still felt homesick. At first, I couldn’t
sleep well, because I didn’t adapt to the climate there. And, since
different teachers have different teaching styles, it was difficult
for me to understand the lessons in the beginning. Besides, I was
new for the students there. As a result, hardly did I have any
close friends. Feeling terribly lonely, I couldn’t help thinking my
parents and my fellow guys in my city every now and then.
&&& However,
as days went on, I slowly adapted myself to the new environment. It
was because I actively communicated with my new schoolmates and
made friends with them that my homesickness gradually
disappeared.(167 words)
Version 2:
Sam was sent to a boarding school and tried to adapt himself to
it but failed. Consequently he began to feel homesick and lonely
and became reluctant with his study. (30 words)
Being homesick is not at all strange to anybody. In reality, I
had a similar experience. In order to promote our
competitive strength in exams, we were only allowed to go home once
a month this term. It was the first time that I had had to stay in
school for such a long time. So much did I miss my parents that
