SPE THERMOSET DIVISION
The Thermoset BOD is comprised of a diverse group of industry leaders from a wide range of companies. Each BOD member is actively involved in the educational materials, conferences, academic scholarships and special events sponsored by the SPE Thermoset Division.
The executive professionals elected to the SPE Thermoset Division Board of Directors are among finest in the industry. This accomplished group of individuals bring their expertise from various aspects of the thermoset industry - ranging from material manufacturing, mold design, molding and raw material supply.
THERMOSET COMPOSITES
Thermosets are ideal materials for the replacement of traditional solutions such as metal, ceramic and engineering thermoplastic. They offer the unique opportunity to consolidate parts, reduce weight and eliminate secondary operations - while improving end use performance& and cost. Thermosetting materials are injection and compression moldable.& They provide design freedom as well as a full range of properties,& colors and finishes.
The SPE Thermoset Division is dedicated to promoting scientific and engineering knowledge relating to thermosetting materials and processing techniques. Transportation, energy and electrical infrastructure interests are demanding the core strengths of thermosetting materials and the high quality components our processors yield. Thermosets are heat and corrosion resistant, lightweight structural dielectrics that provide design freedom and proven value generation.
THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS
MARC IMBROGNO,
SPE Thermoset Division Chair
DIVISION CHAIR
Marc Imbrogno, Director of Materials Engineering, at Mar-Bal, Inc. is responsible for all facets of the materials engineering department, driving research, materials development, support program launch implementaions.& He also inspires the long-range materials technology pipeline at Mar-Bal, Inc.& Marc hass over twenty years of composite materials engineering experience as a result of his prior roles at The Composites Group, Master Builders Technologies (now BASF) and Glastic Corporation. Most recently, Mr. Imbrogno was the Corporate Director of Market and Product Development at The Composites Group. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry from the University of Akron.
PAST CHAIR
Len Nunnery is a well known voice, leader and brand within the thermoset composites industry and is Executive Vice President, A Schulman Engineered Composites.& He is a graduate of Boston College and has been with the company since 1995.&& A Schulman Engineered Composites is& the largest manufacturer of thermoset polyester/glass molding composites in the world.& Len’s history at the company includes operations , research and development, design and new material testing and processing techniques, sales, Global Director of Quality and various commercial roles.&& Len is a Six Sigma Black Belt, holds a patent for a gas assist molding technique used to core thermoset parts, and is a published technical author and speaker.& He is a specialist in organic growth and brand development.& He enjoys the great outdoors and travel.
Greg Spaeth, Treasurer for SPE Thermoset Division, is Project Engineer at Plastics Engineering Company (PLENCO). PLENCO is headquartered in Sheboygan, WI and is a leading North American manufacturer of phenolic resins and thermoset molding materials. Mr. Spaeth holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering.& He carries out special research and development projects, including material development and specific part functionality testing. With the PLENCO Technical Service Department, he works with customers to prototype new tooling and cut costs through process improvement projects. His work now includes providing part optimization and design input utilizing PLENCO's Finite Element Anaylysis capabilities.
Ron Poff, Manager, Global Marketing and Brands – Mar-Bal, Inc., is responsible for Mar-Bal, Inc.’s Corporate marketing activities including communications, brand development and product management. In addition, Ron leads the global sales and new business development within Mar-Bal’s proprietary product lines. Ron has over 24 years of new product development and global business development experience including strong global marketing skills and achieving professional recognition by The Institute for Supply Management(R) (ISM) as a Certified Purchasing Manager (CPM). He currently serves as a Professional Vice-President on the National Council for Pi Sigma E serves on the Board of Directors for the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) Thermoset D is a member of the American Composites Manufacturer’s Association (ACMA) Marketing C further, he is a member of the American Marketing Association (AMA), the Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) and the American Legion. Ron holds a B.S. in Business Management from University of P a Graduate Certificate in eMarketing from the University of Virginia (UVA) and is currently pursuing a Graduate Certificate in Leadership at UVA. Ron is also a veteran of the US Navy and Reserves ().
AWARDS CHAIR
Richard Faulk is Manager of New Business Development for A. Schulman Engineered Composites and has been with the company since 2005.& Mr. Faulk has over 25 years of experience within the field of thermoset polyesters. His work experience covers all aspects associated with manufacture and sale of bu from plant management, sales and marketing and new business development.& In his current capacity, his main focus is to work with original equipment manufacturers in developing new applications where BMC materials provide value. Mr. Faulk has been an active member of the SPE thermoset BOD since 2007.& He resides in St. Charles with his wife, Kim, and their three sons.
MEMBERSHIP CHAIR
Jim Cunningham holds a BS in Chemistry (with minors in Chemical Engineering and Electrical Engineering) from Michigan State University.& He began his career as an Analytical Chemist with American Agricultural Chemical Co. and worked with the U.S. Army , teaching counter-mortar radar at Ft. Bliss, TX.& Since that time Mr. Cunningham has held various engineering, foreman and management positions within the Chemicals and Plastics industries.& Prior to his retirement, he was Vice President of General Super Plating in Charlotte, North Carolina and owner of J.H. Cunningham and Assoc., Inc.& He is the author of 'Robert Chadwick Becomes a Plastic& Professional', a novel written to give students a sense of the dynamics of an industrial career.
Tom Haag is President of Engineering, Quality and Sales for Fox Valley& Molding, a custom processor of thermoset molding compounds and engineering grade thermoplastics.& He has a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois, Champaign. Mr. Haag has been with Fox Valley for 15 years and has 22 years of experience within the plastics industry.& His various roles included Manufacturing Engineer, Injection Molding Process Engineer, mold design, quality control and sales.& He resides in New Lenox with his wife and children.
Randy Lewis has over 35 years in the thermoset industry and is employed by P.R. Lewis Consulting, LLC., a company in partnership with Zeon Technologies, Inc., that produces new thermoset molding compounds that address challenging issues.& Mr. Lewis has held a wide variety of positions within the industry, including Division Manager for a Fortune 100 Company.& He has a degree in Industrial Engineering from Gaston College and served as a helicopter pilot in the Vietnam War. He is past International Vice President and Executive Committee Member of the International Society of Plastic Engineers and has served the Society twice as Chairman of the Council Committee of the Whole.& In addition, he served twice as Chairman of the Thermoset Division and President of the Piedmont Coastal Section.& He resides in the Carolinas& with his wife.
Rick Reichert is the Innovation Manager for the Advanced Organics business unit of OM Group (OMG).& OMG is a diversified company with businesses in specialty chemicals, magnetic technologies and battery technologies that serves the global composites market with raw material additives that also include accelerators and catalysts.& Mr. Reichert is responsible for identifying new technologies and processes for channel to market and new product development, managing the stage gate process from discovery through post launch review, and managing research and development for the Americas.& He has worked at OMG since 2004 and has over three decades of experience in polymer materials development and characterization, previously working for GenCorp in their Polymer Products and Corporate Research divisions and at Premix, Inc. in R&D and Quality.&&&& He holds a BS in Chemistry from the University of Akron, a MS in Engineering/Macromolecular Science from Case Western Reserve University, and a certificate in Innovation and Strategy from the CWRU Weatherhead School of Management.& He has authored several articles in composite industry publications and co-authored patents on accelerators for curing of unsaturated polyester, vinyl ester, and acrylic resins.
Kevin Sweeney, Vice President of Business Development at Bo-Witt Products, has recently rejoined the Thermoset BOD. Prior to his recent recess from te SPE Thermset BOD, he had served for 15 years and was Councilor for SPE for six years. Bo-Witt is an engineered solutions company, composites molder and CNC metal component manufacturer in Edinburgh, Indiana.& Kevin has over 30 years of experience in product, composites and tool design, as well as material selection, project management, metal to plastics conversions, design for manufacturability, and lean manufacturing. Kevin has a Bachelor of Science from Purdue University.
Greg West has been building molds, tools and special machines for the plastics industry since 1967. He began his career as an apprentice tool and die maker. During his 40 plus career he has served as a lead tool maker, foreman, project manager, esimator, operations manager, and vice president in charge of engineering and sales.& On January 1, 1999, Greg started Westool Corporation, a mold building and repair facility. Greg possesses a strong knowledge of building techniques for molds and related tools, as well as considerable experience in manufacturing management and international tool building.
