Bo Burnham's latest show is lightning-fast, laugh-out-loud funny and just
plain unmissable, says Mark Monahan.

Bo Burnham’s new show is called What, to which he might have added: “… exactly are we all doing in this room?” Much of it is comedy about comedy, about Burnham as a performer, and about the audience’s complicated relationship with him.
It is also character comedy-cum-satire of the slyest kind. Burnham – the 6ft 5in, boy-wonder singer-songwriter who in 2010 sauntered away with the – barely uses costumes, props or put-on voices. But – now adding Daft Punky electronica to his Ben Folds-style pianism – only rarely, if ever, is this electrifyingly intelligent New Englander speaking directly as himself on stage.
One minute, he’s turning implausibly ma the next, he’s pogoing like the blue-collar rapper he knows we know he isn’t. He teases us with shards of political incorrectness as pointed as they are insincere, daring us to laugh at a slickly worded paedophile joke here, a spot of faux masturbation or a breathlessly brilliant “sluts” poem there. People say I’m too full of myself, he muses. Whatever: here’s a song in the voice of God.
If his Edinburgh debut was more impressive than it was laugh-out-loud funny, this lightning-fast, constantly wrong-footing, even more ambitious follow-up is supremely both. Whether Burnham is broadsiding comedy’s habit of trivialising misery, or slamming the cynical marketing of lobotomous pop to the young, the songs are first-rate. That supposedly divine ditty in fact sees the Almighty humanistically cancel himself out by suggesting that people should be nice to each other for the sake of it (not because their religion dictates it), and Burnham even finds time for a suavely staged debate between his right and left brain.
How he has acquired such wit, wisdom and complete mastery of his art after just 22 years on earth, who knows – but he has. Despite perhaps owing an excessive debt to Tim Minchin in the air-keyboard close, this is a royal straight flush of a show, a triumph of conception and execution, its comic strike-rate as high as its IQ. It is, in fact, plain unmissable, that’s What.
