&&Abstract:&&In this paper, endoscope with aided lens was designed for observation of fire-fighting foam. Firstly, water-proof and corrosion-resistant endoscope was completed according to the foam's characteristics. Then, aided lens for clear observation was designed corresponding to the endoscope's lens system. Secondly, the fire-fighting foam was produced using low expansion foam extinguishing system and observed through endoscope with aided lens. Finally, the data were analyzed considering the foam's drainage process. This endoscope with aided lens could be used to describe foam's interior structure's evolution including foam drainage, film rupture and bubble coarsening. & (2013) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

& & & & Abstract:& & & & By using tetrabutyl titanate as the main material, TiO2 nanoparticles/CNTs composite particles have been prepared in acidic abundant aqueous solution at low temperature without calcination. The microstructure of the composite particles, including surface morphology, phase composition and specific surface area was characterized by SEM, TEM, Raman, XPS and BET. The results reveal that TiO2 nanoparticles coated uniformly on CNTs surfaces were mainly anatase type. The surface roughness of CNTs was remarkably increased after coating. However, the specific surface area of composite particles decreased by 23.4 m2·g-1 than that of CNTs with uncoated TiO2. Photocatalytic activity of TiO2 nanoparticles/CNTs composite particles shows a significant increase of absorption intensity both in ultraviolet band and visible light band according to UV-vis spectra. & (2013) Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

& & & & Abstract:& & & & A novel environmentally friendly surface activation process of electroless nickel plating on the poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) surface was developed. This process is applying a semi-Interpenetrating Polymer Network (semi-IPN) hydrogel biopolymer to modify the PVC surface by the chemical method. The hydrophilic semi-IPN hydrogel film with abundant amino groups, which could effectively chemisorb palladium ions prior to the subsequent electroless nickel plating onto the PVC substrate surface was fast obtained after pretreatment. The activated reaction progress and resulting Ni. P layer were characterized by attenuated total reflection fourier transform infrared (ATR FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results show that electroless nickel plating was successfully initiated by the palladium nanoparticles formed on the PVC surface. & & & & Abstract:& & & & By using organic amine as the soft template, TiO2 nanostructured thin films were deposited on the surface of short glass fibers (SGFs) by biomimetic synthesis technology at low temperature (85°C). The properties of composite particles, including surface morphology, the phase composition of the coating layer and microstructure were characterized by SEM, XRD, XPS and Raman. The results show that the functional layers containing NH2 and OH groups can be formed through a kind of organic amine, which can induce the bio-mineralization of nano-TiO2 on the SGFs surfaces. XRD shows that TiO2 thin films uniformly coated on SGFs surfaces were mainly anatase. The surface roughness of SGFs was remarkably increased after coating. Compared with uncoated SGFs as filler, the abrasive loss of composite coatings decreased to 47 percent of that coatings filled with uncoated SGFs, when the composite fiber powders were filled in wear-resistant coatings based on the silicone modified epoxy resins. & & & & Abstract:& & & & Nano-TiO2/glass beads composite particles were prepared using heterogeneous nucleation method at low temperature (80 C). The microstructure and micro-morphology of the as-prepared samples were characterized by SEM, XRD, Raman, XPS and BET. Different concentrations of phytic acid solution were used to modify the surfaces of glass beads before the precipitate of TiO2 nanoparticles films. The results show that phytic acid plays an important role in the growth and micro-morphology of TiO2 nanoparticles on the surfaces of glass beads. It was found that the specific surface areas of the composite particles were 4, 45 and 38 times that of the pristine glass beads when the concentration of phytic acid was 0, 3.0 and 6.0 g/L, respectively. XPS analysis shows that a TiO2 layer is formed on the surfaces of glass beads through TiOSi bonds. XRD and Raman spectra of the TiO2 samples prepared by blank experiments without glass beads indicate that the crystal type of TiO2 is anatase. The wear-resistance of silicone-modified epoxy resin was largely improved when nano-TiO2/glass beads composite particles were filled in the matrix, especially for the samples pretreated with 3.0 g/L phytic acid. The main reason concerns the fact that TiO2 nanoparticles evenly loaded on the surface of glass beads were necked together, forming a rough and porous-structured coating layer when pretreated with 3.0 g/L phytic acid. & 2012 Elsevier Inc.
