idea that in the Asia-Pacific region the relationship between economic growth, industrial transformation and the rise of serviceindustries in general, and producer services in particular, appears to be different to thatfound in North America or Europe. After an exploration of the context for producer servicesgrowth, some simple indices for measuring the relative positionof Asia-Pacific producer services in the global context are used to demonstrate that they are apparently less prominent than expected. More robust data, including case studies, are needed to substantiate this preliminary paper.The paper concludes with the elementsof an agenda for further research.The last thirty years have witnessed extensive changes in the economiesof the Asia-Pacific Region. One of the principal goals of economic development, much of it steeredby national government policies, has been to ‘catch up’ with the more developed economies of Western Europe and North America.The record of change,especially during the 1980s, has been impressive and the Asia-Pacific is now clearlyone of the key playersin the global economic system. The GDPof the region has now reached a magnitude that is similar to the European Union or the UnitedStates. While the changes in the region have certainly been remarkable they appear to have been achievedin a different way from Europe and North America.One area of difference is the relationship between economic growth, industrial transformation and the rise of the service industries in the economies of the Asia-Pacific region. Whereas the shift towards more flexible modes of production and outsourcing in North America and Europe has been accompanied by greater specialisation in the supply of services, especially informationand knowledge intensive services, the undisputed role of the Asia.Pacific region as a globalsupplier of manufactured goods seems not to be matched by their role as a supplierof services. One reason could be the use of services from outside the region. A study by Clark (1993) showed that a small Australian firm used Italian designers, Chinese production sites, and London- based freight forwarders to meet retail demand in the US and Europe.Its organisation illustrates the part that externalproviders play in serviceprovision in the region, suggesting that the production growth is not necessarily reflected in parallel local service growth and diversification. If this approach is a common one it suggeststhat links between service development and industrial developmentin the region may reflecta new context in telecommunications and freightsystems.
