蓟县县级文物保护单位--鼓楼匾额"古渔阳"三字，充分概括了蓟县的古老历史。天津蓟县在春秋时期曾建无终子国。秦代置无终县。汉高祖元年，项羽封韩广为辽东王，建都子此。隋代大业初改名渔阳。唐朝诗人杜甫《后出塞》有"渔阳蒙侠地，击鼓吹笙竽"诗句，白居易《长恨歌》有"渔阳颦鼓动地来"诗句都指此地。在唐、辽、金、元各朝，蓟县都叫渔阳。明洪武初年，渔阳名称才被蓟州代替。"畿东锁钥"的题匾，则概括了蓟县地理位置的重要。自古以来，蓟县即为北方重镇，军事要冲，兵家必争之地。西汉燕王臧荼杀辽东王韩广，东汉大将吴起杀幽州牧苗曾，东晋时后燕孟广平斩李朗，都在无终(今蓟县)这里发生。在后赵、'契丹、辽代、元、明、清直到抗日时期，这里都曾是战场。蓟县以北，古为游牧民族聚居之地，他们不断兴兵侵扰。因此，唐代、辽代、明代等历代统治者都在此设置重兵把守，并早巳筑城设防。东汉时无终即为右北平郡"四城"之一。明朝迁都北京以后，蓟县正是京城东邻，是拱卫京城的锁钥重地，因而更要在此加固城防。明陆树声《蓟州重修城楼记略》说："蓟州为京辅要镇。……枕山带河，重关复镇，递为应援，以翼蔽镊辅。……故崇塘巨屏，特设守备，宿劲兵，丰储峙，以颛城守。"这些都说明了蓟县地理位置的重要。蓟县城原先为土城。明洪武四年(1371年)，将土城包以砖石，周围九里十三步。城北有山冈阻挡，没有设门。城的东、南、西三面设门，门上建楼，城的四角建角楼。鼓楼建在城的中心。明祟祯十五年(1642年)，清兵攻入蓟州，城被拆毁，鼓楼被焚。清朝顺治年间、康熙年间、道光年间，曾几次按明时原样重修，但或因地震、或因大火、或因年久失修，又几次毁坏。到抗日战争结束时，蓟县城上角楼全塌，城垣拆尽。城中鼓楼也破烂不堪。现在人们看到的蓟县鼓楼，是1983年以后几年内，由蓟县人民 *** 几次拨款修复的。在昔日破烂的鼓楼基础上，修残补缺，包砌城台，整修楼道，油漆彩绘，使鼓楼再展新容，为天津市保留了一座历史最久的鼓楼景观，也为国内外游客提供了一处良好的游览场所。
