WWE is in the midst of building toward its next pay-per-view event, Fastlane. The event, which takes place in just over one week, will replace Elimination Chamber, which ran every February from 2010-14.
The February pay-per-view is always very important since it is the last one before WrestleMania. Prior to Elimination Chamber, the February event was known as No Way Out.
In 2002, WWE had a golden opportunity to create a memorable moment.
In his battle over control of the company with Ric Flair, Vince McMahon had decided to take desperate measures, announcing that he would be "injecting the poison" of the New World Order into the WWE.
For fans all over the world, this was a very intriguing prospect.
Many of those same fans had watched WWE purchase World Championship Wrestling, giving it one of the greatest angles in wrestling history at its disposal.
Suddenly, all of the Superstars who had competed for WCW now had the chance to work for WWE, giving fans a chance to see matches and rivalries they never thought they would.
However, WWE failed to deliver, disappointing many fans with the invasion storyline. Many fans, in defense of WWE, pointed to the fact that several of the biggest names from WCW were still under contract to AOL/Time Warner and basically sat at home getting paid.
But in February 2002, three of those names were set to return to the ring. The same three men were the catalysts for one of the biggest angles in wrestling history when they formed the nWo in 1996.
Those three men were Hollywood Hogan, Kevin Nash and Scott Hall. Arguably, professional wrestling has never been more popular than it was from 1996 until the early 2000s, and the nWo was largely responsible for that.
At No Way Out in 2002, fans were given a sight they likely thought they'd never see&the nWo at a WWE event.
Hall, Nash and Hogan closed the show by attacking "Stone Cold" Steve Austin and leaving him with the letters "nWo" spray-painted on his back&an old trademark of the group.
It appeared WWE had laid the pieces for a great storyline.
But the reason why the nWo was so successful was because of the way it began. It was laid out brilliantly.
Before the days when fans could log on to the Internet and get information, WCW had managed to get Hall and Nash to come over from WWE, grabbing two of its rival's biggest stars.
Things started with Hall invading WCW Nitro and declaring war against WCW. But whom was he speaking for, WWE?
In the weeks that followed, Hall continued to appear, and soon, his good friend Nash did, too. Eric Bischoff, who was part of the announce team on Nitro at the time, was often in the middle of these appearances. He made it seem like Hall and Nash weren't welcome, and he did it so well.
At Bash at the Beach in July 1996, Hall and Nash were placed into a six-man tag team match. Hall and Nash&known together as The Outsiders&had promised a mystery partner.
Their opponents were three of the best WCW had to offer&Randy Savage, Sting and Lex Luger. For most of the match, it seemed Hall and Nash didn't actually have a partner.
But then came Hogan to shock the world. Hogan became the third member of the nWo, putting the icing on the cake of one of the greatest storylines in wrestling history.
Fast-forward to 2002, and now WWE is going to try its hand at using the historic group. But instead of following the blueprint laid out by WCW years before, it decided to go in a completely different direction.
What if Hall and Nash would have appeared out of nowhere, declaring war on the WWE? That would have had fans buzzing, but McMahon killed any suspense by announcing that the group would be coming.
Sure, it was great to see Hall, Nash and Hogan appear at No Way Out in February 2002, and it did the right thing by having them go after its top guy in Austin.
But the group was poorly booked from there.
At WrestleMania 18, Hogan faced The Rock in one of the most memorable matches in WWE history, but Austin was put into what amounted to a meaningless match against Hall. Nash wasn't even on the card.
What made the nWo so successful initially was its stance as it was the trio against all of WCW. Bischoff and his cohorts had successfully created competition from within, something WWE has always struggled to do.
After WrestleMania 18, the response Hogan had received from the crowd in Toronto and in Montreal the next night on Monday Night Raw helped lead WWE to take him out of the nWo and put him in red and yellow again.
So where did that leave the group? This is where WWE followed the same path WCW once did, placing too many members in the nWo, watering it down in the process.
Soon, Hall and Nash had Big Show, X-Pac, Booker T and Shawn Michaels in the nWo. If there was one thing that hurt WCW's version of the nWo, it was putting too many people in it.
Not long after, the nWo disintegrated, left for the memories of wrestling fans. Perhaps that's what WWE wanted the whole time.
So how could WWE have made its nWo better?
WWE didn't want to give fans something they'd already seen, and doing things the same way would be acknowledging how good it was in WCW. That left it in a tough spot but not one that couldn't be managed.
How did you feel about the nWo in WWE?
I thought it was great&exactly how it needed to be.
It was terrible&Vince never wanted anything good to come from it.
The fans turning Hogan after WrestleMania meant doom for the nWo.
I don't even remember the nWo.

What plans did it have for the group had Hogan remained a part of it? The match between him and The Rock seemed to change the course of the nWo forever.
It seems WWE needed more shock value. Fans knew they were getting Hall, Nash and Hogan. WWE should have considered adding one of their big names to the group, the same way WCW did with Hogan several years prior.
At the same time, doing that may have altered the course of history, meaning the match between Hogan and The Rock wouldn't have taken place at WrestleMania.
Still, WWE should have invested more in the group even if it was an idea created by Bischoff and WCW.
In the end, fans are just left to ask questions such as the ones above, wondering what could have been. One thing is certain: WWE's nWo was nowhere near as successful as it was in WCW.
Of course, McMahon likely never wanted it to be.
