Des Voeux Road West
Des Voeux Road Central and Des Voeux Road West are two
on the north shore of , . They were named after the 10th , Sir . The name was predominantly spelt with the
in pre-war documents but is nowadays spelt officially as Des Voeux Road.
Beginning in 1857, the northern shore of Hong Kong Island (also known as ) underwent a series of
under then-Governor Sir . The first phase of the
had a direct effect on this current street, which used to be known as
during the
era. Bowring's plans were opposed by British merchants who held lands in the Central area, and in response, the government instead commenced work in land reclamation in the Chinese-populated Western District. By the time the reclamation was extended to Central, the newly reclaimed land in Western had already been settled, and there was a discontinuity between the two roads running along the western and middle portions of the reclaimed shoreline. Upon completion, the roads were named Bowring Praya West and Bowring Praya Central respectively.
Another series of extensive reclamation projects began in 1887 under then-Governor Des Voeux. Upon completion in 1904, Bowring Praya West and Bowring Praya Central (which by then were situated inland from the shoreline) were respectively renamed Des Voeux Road West and Des Voeux Road Central per the orders of then- and acting Governor
during the
visit to Hong Kong in 1890.
From 1942 to 1945, the road was renamed -dori by the
government.

Motor vehicle emissions are the most significant source of particulate matter (PM) in urban environments. This study was undertaken to observe the evolution of aerosols downwind from a busy road, concentrating specifically on the aerosol total number maximum and number size distribution.
A Grimm Aerosol Technik (5.400) CPC and DMA 5.5-900 classifier were used to measure ultra-fine particles from 9.8 nm to 1.1 μm at varying distances up to 100 m from the road side. Contrary to current accepted aerosol theory particle number concentration was seen to rise with increasing
horizontal distance from the road side up to a maximum distance of about 100 m. As this occurred the number of fine particles was seen to increase as numbers of larger particles declined. These findings are discussed in light of existing aerosol literature on aerosol formation and dispersion.
Kraftfahrzeuge stellen die wichtigste Aerosolquelle in st?dtischen Umgebungen dar. Im Rahmen der vorliegenden Arbeit wurde die Entwicklung von Aerosolen im Lee einer verkehrsreichen Strasse beobachtet. Dabei wurde das Hauptaugenmerk auf das Maximum der totalen Aerosolanzahl
und auf die Anzahlgr?ssenverteilung gerichtet. Zur Messung ultrafeiner Partikel von 9.8 nm bis 1.1 μm Durchmesser in unterschiedlichen Abst?nden von bis zu 100 m von der Strasse wurden ein Grimm Aerosol Technik (5.400) CPC und ein DMA 5.5-900 Klasssifizierer verwendet.
Im Gegensatz zur gegenw?rtig anerkannten Aerosoltheorie wurde beobachtet, dass die Partikelanzahlkonzentration mit zunehmender horizontaler Entfernung von der Strasse bis zu einer maximalen Entfernung von etwa 100 m zunimmt. Dabei stellte sich eine Zunahme der Anzahl der kleinen
Partikel heraus, w?hrend die Anzahl der gr?sseren Teilchen abnahm. Diese Ergebnisse werden im Bezug zur verfügbaren Literatur über Aerosolentwicklung und Dispersion diskutiert.
